John Lang, according to Mrs. Walker, may have been an East India merchant with his headquarters in Virginia Street. Jean Facey, a cousin of mine, (Jean Kennedy Lang, one of John Lang's daughters, was her grandmother) said he was a muslin manufacturer.

I found the following in the The Furniture Gazette - 1884 - Page 186:

LANG & Co., muslin-manufacturers, Ingram Street, Glasgow, have dissolved partnership by the retirement therefrom of Messrs. John Lang and Thomas Kennedy. ...
John Lang and Thomas Kennedy. Mr. James Lang has, along with his brother, Thomas K. Lang, acquired right to the assets of the dissolved company, ...

And in the THE SCOTTISH COMMERCIAL LIST COMPRISING GLASGOW, GREENOCK, ABERDEEN, DUNDEE ...

84 Ingram Street, mnfrs. and warehousemen. George Knox Hutton, David Hutton, ... Lang and Cousin. Muslin mnfrs. John Lang, James Cousin. 19th April 1878. ...
The Lang Family House - Beechmont House, Lenzie, circa 1870. Now 2 Beechmont Road, Glasgow, G66 5AD

The Langs also lived in Lenzie at one time. My cousin Malcolm Beattie (Mally) supplied me with this photocopied picture of the their Lenzie home - Beechmont House, Lenzie, circa 1870. Now 2 Beechmont Road, Glasgow, G66 5AD.

According to to my great aunt Mrs. Walker, John Lang lived at 9 Crown Gardens, Glasgow. The Lang family had a country house at Inverkip called Langhouse, and they used to leave Crown Gardens and go down to Langhouse for the summer. They had a complete staff in each house, so that the men of the family with work in Glasgow could repair there during the working week.

It is currently a residential home: Langhouse Residential Home, Langhouse Road, Inverkip, PA16 0DE. However, despite the name of the house, I have found no record of the Langs ever having bought the house and the name Langhouse was there from well before they would have owned it, if they ever did. I guess they probably used it, but did not own it.
