The following information comes from my grandfather's (Claud Leonard Broun) writings:
"A John Kennedy was born in Ayrshire in 1694....The Kennedies were Unitarians....In religion, my forebears had all, so far back as I know of them, been adherents of Presbyterianism, except the Kennedys who were Unitarians."
My father tells me that there is a tradition in the family that this branch of Kennedys are descended from the Earls of Cassilis, because one of his Kennedy ancestors used their heading on his notepaper.
John Kennedy died before his wife Alice Horsman. She remarried to Peter Rae. Therefore John Kennedy's widow became Alice Rae. His children are often mistakenly shown as being descended from Alice and Peter Rae.
