Apparently there is a portrait of Alison Turnbull which hangs in someone's home in Massachusetts. It was painted by George Watson. I have not yet been able to get hold of a picture of it.
Alison was the daughter of James Turnbull, a Levantine merchant who had come to London from Roxburghshire. She was born in London. According to Burke's Landed Gentry 1850:
[Robert Stodart] married in 1784 (sic), Alice (sic), eldest daughter and co-heir of James Turnbull, Esq., the last male representative in the direct line of a branch of the ancient family of Turnbull, which is said to have possessed property in Roxburghshire for 800 years. On the death of her only sister, Mrs. Riddle, without issue, Mrs Stodart became sole heiress of this old family.
Her name and date of marriage is corrected in later editions.
Robert Stodart Wyld reports that she was born and educated in London. She died 25 July 1833 at 73 years of age. RSW has descriptions of her character - a very posh lady. She lived at 52 Queen Street Edinburgh. The house was sold to the famous Sir James Simpson in 1833.
The appearance of the name Riddle in her son John Riddle Stodart is due to her sister's connection with the Riddle family.
