James Brown was the father of Robert Brown. James Brown was a merchant in Linlithgow and Falkirk and was known to have died before 1814. As he had a son, Thomas, born in January 1780, the earliest date for his death would be 1779.

Mention is made of James Brown in Scotland and Australia, 1788-1850: Emigration, Commerce and Investment by David Stirling Macmillan, Scotland, 1967:

" [Robert] Brown was active as a 'home trader' in Glasgow in 1803. The Burgess Roll, on which he was entered in 1813, described him as 'merchant and guild brother, son to the deceased James Brown, merchant of Linlithgow."

Mention is also made of him in the death and burial records of his wife Jean Cuthel, and he is named on her tombstone.

His son Robert Brown, is in at least two places, known as Robert Brown, junior. This would suggest that perhaps James Brown's father was called Robert, and he was still alive during a substantial part of his lifetime.
