Of the sons of Dr Thomas, Thomas
James Maclachlan's family (1828-81) included Thomas R (1870-1921) who had a
son born in India who reached the rank of Colonel serving in WW2. There
was a daughter, who I am told, married the Kaid of Egypt.
Doctors were James Maclachlan (1847-1928), son a doctor Maclachlan in WW1
Charles Fellowes Maclachlan (c1834-71)
Hugh Kennedy Maclachlan (1842- ) to the Army then NZ; two daughters
Ivie Macrae Maclachlan the FC minister who had three sons,

There were three Charles Fellowes, all cousins that held commissions in WW1,
RAMC, infantry & Pay Corps. One was the son of William whose son was a pilot
in WW2.
Dr Thomas’children and their families, where known, were:
1. Thomas James was born 21st April 1828 at Rothesay and nominated for a commission in the Indian Army by Major General Robertson on the petition of James D Robertson.
He served as a Cadet at the training unit for the Indian Army at Addiscombe, Surrey during 1846 and 1847. He was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant RA in June 1847, Lieutenant in March 1853, Captain August 1858, Major August 1858 (late of Bombay Regt) and Adjutant in1861. He served in the Indian Mutiny in 1857and 1878, in the recapture of Gwalior, the siege of Jhansi, and the battles of Betwo, Koonch, Gallowke and Calpse(?) He was in E Bn Royal Horse Artillery at Kirkee 1865-8. He was appointed Honorary Major General retired in December 1878. He married in 1869 Eleanor Frances daughter of Thomas McKenzie. He died at Arklow Square, Ramsgate 8th February 1881. She remarried an Arnold. Three children are known to have been alive at the time of the General’s death and two are identified:

Thomas Robertson born 8th April 1870 at Bombay, was gazetted in March 1889 2nd Lieutenant 2nd Bn Bengal Border Regt, in August 1891 probationary Lieutenant, 1891-8 Lieutenant Indian Staff Corps, 1899 Lieutenant 40th Pathans, Captain March 1901, Major 1907, CMG March 1915, Lieutenant Colonel in June 1915, Colonel (temporary Brigadier) Indian Army March 1917. Married Edith daughter of Henry Priestley Jacob at Quetta October 1897. Died 3rd October 1921 at Staffles (?) Hotel, Lahore
His son Clive Moncreiffe born 25th December 1899 Meean Meer, Lahore. Lieutenant RE July 1919, Captain July 1930, Major August 1938, OBE 1943, MID 1943, Lieutenant Colonel July 1945. Married Edith who died in 1966; he died 1979 at Tonbridge, Kent
2. William was born c1830 at Rothesay. He married in 1864 in the City of London, Adelaide Annie (born c1841) daughter of William Beckwith Towse. He was a stockbroker in 1864, a “sea captain” in 1881and a mining engineer in 1891when he lived at 35 Glazebury Road, Hammersmith. He is believed to have died in 1905. His children were:

Charles Fellows was born c1875 at Hackney, stockbroker. He married in 1906 at Dartford, Elsie Maybey. He was appointed a temporary Lieutenant in the Army Pay department in April 1915 and a temporary Paymaster Captain in June 1918. In 1947 they were living at 60 Haywards Road, Haywards Heath, Sussex and in 1951 his addresses were the Stock Exchange and the Victoria Inn, Roche, Cornwall. He died in that year at or near the last of these addresses. His known children were:

Allan Moncreiffe born 1911 at Hendon, Middlesex. He was an RAF Squadron Leader when in 1943 he married at Heliopolis, Egypt, Gabrielle Yvonne, born about 1920, daughter of James Hargreaves Dickenson, WAAF Section Officer. He was promoted to Wing Commander in 1944. Besides RAF service Allan was an hotellier.

4. Charles Fellowes born 1834 at Rothesay, MD Glasgow 1855, house surgeon Glasgow Royal Infirmary; assisted his father at Rothesay, 1861-71, whose practice extended across the Kyles of Bute to Kilfinan in Argyll. He died 28th February 1871.
5. Ivie Macrae born 1837 at Rothesay. University and Free Church College, Glasgow. He was ordained at Barrhead in 1862 and was appointed to Grahamstoun, Neilston in 1863 and to Kilmarnock High in 1871, settling at Uddingston 1877. He retired from Bothwell in 1891. He had married in 1863 Jean Guise daughter of James McCulloch of Frees (?). She had been born in France. Marriage witnesses were the groom’s brother Thomas then a major of the Royal Artillery and James G McIndoe, presumably his brother-in-law. He died at Mount Pleasant Street, Bothwell in 1891.
Thomas (later Sir Thomas) James Leigh was born in 1864 at Barrhead. He was educated at Ayr Academy and married firstly in Glasgow in 1886 Mary daughter of John Orr, commission agent. The groom was then a journalist living at 45 Buccleuch Street. In 1891he was agent to the Liberal Union Association living at 6 York Place, Chorton-cum-Medlock, Lancashire. In 1906 he married Edith Osbourne in North London. He was the Principle Agent to the Conservative Party and was created a knight in 1927. He died on 1st March 1946 when his home was 23 Princes Avenue, Muswell Hill in North London. Dame Edith died three years later at Ewhurst Green, Surrey. The daughters of the second marriage were:

Hugh David Cathcart was born 1869 at Neilston, Glasgow. He was a law student in 1891 living in his father’s home at Bothwell in Lanarkshire but emigrated soon after to settle in the United States. He worked there as a ranch hand and then as a newspaperman. In 1903 he was naturalised a US citizen and in 1904 married Margaret Groves Wolverton. In that year he was ordained in the Christian (Disciples) Church. He lived in Shellyville, Kentucky from 1901 to 1907 and settled at Richmond, Virginia in 1908. He qualified as a Doctor of Divinity in 1918.
Charles Fellowes Moncreiffe was born at Bothwell, Lanarkshire on 10th April 1879. He was trained in the law and became a Writer of the Signet in 1907. He was a partner in the Edinburgh firm of Ronald & Ritchie WS. He joined the Army as a Great War volunteer and married on 10th April 1915 Alyce Swan daughter of William Fairweather, United Free Church minister of Maryton, County Angus. He was then a 2nd Lieutenant in the 11th service Battalion of the Gordon Highlanders. The marriage was witnessed by Louise H D Maclachlan. In the following year he was appointed Adjutant and temporary Captain. (Most ranks were temporary in wartime and those officers that remained in service on the resumption of peacetime status reverted to their lower, substantive ranks). He had served in the France and Flanders theatre of the War before being posted to Ireland to deal with insurgency. He was a good deal older at 39 than most other junior officers serving for the duration. His home was in Broomhall Road at the western extremity of Edinburgh when he died at Longmore Hospital on 20th October 1964. His widow died on 29th November 1972 at her son’s home in Oxted, Surrey.
William Patrick Gawain was born in Dublin in 1918. After school and University in Edinburgh he joined the Burma Oil Company and sailed to Burma (or India) to begin his service. Soon after Aung San led the Japanese-trained Burma Independent Army into the country from Thailand in December 1941 he was transferred to the Burma Army for the duration. After the Japanese Surrender in 1945 he was hospitalised to recover his health. In 1945 at Calcutta, then a Major of the Burma Reserve of Officers, he married Lavender Joy, daughter of Herbert (later Sir Herbert) John Todd, Resident Eastern States Political Service.
6. Hugh Kennedy born 30th April 1842 at Rothesay; LRCP, LFPS Edin 1866; married 10th April 1868 at Glasgow, Kate born c1842, daughter of Robert Watters, mercantile clerk. He joined the Army as an Assistant Surgeon (Staff) October 1867 and was appointed to the 74th Foot in 1868. He served in Jamaica 1870, Bombay from1872, and resigned in January 1874. He practised at Thornhill, Dumfries from 1875. On emigrating he was at Palmerston North, New Zealand from1881 and Huntly from 1899. He died on 15th June 1907. His daughters were:

10. James was born in 1847 at Rothesay. He qualified at Glasgow University, MD and CM in 1874and was assistant MD at the County Asylum, Bridgend, Glamorgan from1878. His practice was at Lockerbie from 1881 till 1927. In 1881 he lived at St Brydes Terrace and by 1885 at St Blanes. He married at Falkirk in 1885 Barbara Gibson, widow of McGlashan and daughter of Archibald Johnstone, newspaper proprietor. He was a Justice of the Peace for the County of Dumfries and died at Lockerbie on 18th December 1928. His widowed sister Mrs Susan McIndoe lived at Dr James’ home at least between 1881 and 1885. Her son was James P McIndoe. Dr James’ children were:
Charles Fellowes born c1890, attended Loughborough Grammar School from 1903-7, then Watson’s Academy in Edinburgh, qualifying as MB and ChB in 1915. He was appointed temporary Lieutenant (Medical Officer) RAMC in October of the same year and was awarded the Military Cross in 1917. He died unmarried at Dryfemont, his father’s last home, in Dryfesdale, Lockerbie, in 1964.
James Archibald was born on 23rd August 1896 at Lockerbie. In January 1915 he was appointed a temporary Lieutenant on the general list but relinquished his commission in December 1916 while serving with the Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died at Hitchin in Hertfordshire in 1949.
