Margaret Brown (married surname: Younger)

Robert Stodart Wyld in his Memoirs states the following:

... Margaret [Brown] married William Younger, the son of Mr Younger of Craigielands, near Moffat. She was very pretty, quick, and clever, and at heart benevolent and kind, but somewhat flighty in character. This lady has gone over to the Roman Catholic Church. She has only one son.

Margaret Brown married William Younger of Auchen Castle, Moffat, of the brewing family. She had at least one son, also William, whose name appears on her death certificate. Margaret Younger (Brown) was a widow at the time of her death which took place in St John Street, Edinburgh on the 26th July 1900 at the age of 58. She would therefore have been born sometime from 27th July 1841 to 26th July 1842 inclusive. In the 1861 census she is shown as age 19 born in London. She would therefore have been born sometime from 8th April 1841 to 7th April 1842 inclusive. Putting the figures together this means that she would have been born between 27th July 1841 and 7th April 1842 inclusive. However census returns are notoriously inaccurate and her parents might well have been in Australia in the early 1840's - although I could not find any reference to her in the New South Wales births records so London is the more likely hypothesis. She does not appear at her parents' address in the 1871 census, suggesting that she was married by 1871.

Margaret Brown's husband, William Younger of Auchencastle, Moffat, County of Dumfries, sometimes resided at Haggerston Castle, Northumberland, afterwards at Craven Lodge, Melton Moubray, latterly at Auchencastle where he died on the 4th August 1886 at the age of 55. His mother was Isabella Johnston and his father William Younger. He was born on the 8th March 1831 in Edinburgh. Auchen Castle is now a hotel. The parish is Kirkpatrick Juxta.

I could not find any reference to Margaret Brown's marriage to William Younger in the Scottish registers so she may have been married in England. There are too many William Youngers born in Scotland during the period 1861 to 1887 to be certain which one, if any, could be their son. Nor do I know whether or not she had other children. I found one birth for a Younger in the Dumfries area between 1861 and 1887, but none in Kirkpatrick Juxta. Their wills are recorded but I have not yet had time to look at them.

I found the following marriage entries via FreeBMD; of course one would have to check the other names on the pages:
