In his father's will in 1840, James is mentioned as his oldest son. However, there seems to have been some distrust of him, as he is treated more cautiously than his younger brothers John, William and Thomas.
One peculiarity is that I have never been able to trace any record of his birth in the Scottish registers, despite having found his four brothers and two sisters. I have placed his most likely date of birth around 1807 because Robert Stodart Wyld describes Mary as the oldest of the family, so I am presuming that he would have been born after her. However, it is possible that he could have been born earlier, as he might not have been alive at the time RSW wrote his memoirs. Nonetheless, I have found no trace of his birth at earlier likely dates either.
